I have read in an old interview that this was his first nude scene ever and he was very embarressed to turn around to the camera, knewing that they filmed his penis too.
I remember an interview with Lindsay Duncan. She's the actress who played Lady Bellaston in that scene. She's lying clothed on the bed and Tom Jones is talking to her. When they filmed Max's nude scene she came in to read opposite him so he could react appropriately. Max and Lindsay agreed in advance that since it was his first nude scene she would do him the professional courtesy of only looking him in the eye and not look down since he was so embarrassed. Unfortunately, British actors have a tradition where the off-camera actor will do things to try and throw the actor being filmed off their game. It's a kind of professional challenge. So on the day of the shoot when Max turned around to give his lines instead of finding Lindsay staring him in the eyes, she was staring straight at his penis. She spent the entire scene talking and reacting to his penis and refusing to look up at him. You can kind of see the frustration he was feeling in Max's performance! I don't know how many takes they needed to get the scene done, but Lindsay said she had a great day!
